What to expect

Your visit to Anagni will be a true journey through time, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beating heart of medieval history. Known as the “City of the Popes,” Anagni played a fundamental role in the religious and political history of the Middle Ages. One of the city's must-sees is the Palace of the Popes, an imposing building that not only fascinates with its architecture but also holds within it one of the most dramatic pages of papal history. Here, in 1303, Pope Boniface VIII suffered the humiliating “slap of Anagni,” an event that marked the beginning of the end of his papacy, when he was captured by the forces of King Philip IV of France. As you walk through its halls, you will breathe in the atmosphere of those tense days, also discovering frescoes that tell of the greatness and power of the Church during that period.

Continuing on your tour, you cannot miss the Cathedral of Anagni, a majestic example of medieval architecture that represents the spiritual heart of the city. The cathedral is a living testimony to the religious devotion that has characterized this land for centuries. Inside, the solemn atmosphere of the naves and architectural details will take you on a journey between faith and art.

But it is in the crypt of San Magno that lies one of Anagni's most fascinating treasures. This place, with its spectacular decorations and frescoes, offers a must-see for those who are passionate about medieval art and religious history. The sacred images that adorn the walls tell not only biblical stories, but also the deep connection between the local community and the Church.

Anagni, with its artistic and cultural heritage, is a city that invites reflection on the history, religion and power of past centuries. Every corner of this fascinating town, nestled in the lush green Ciociaria, tells a story of grandeur, intrigue and spirituality that will leave you speechless.
